Since the 15th century the Henriques were the largest landowners in the Câmara de Lobos area in Madeira Island. It was there, on 1425, that the first vines were planted, following the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator. The initial planting was made on the slopes of Pico da torre, which belonged to the Henriques, and up the rift valleys of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande, which are traditionally considered to produce the best Madeira Wine.
