The Bacalhôa Palace, a National Monument, was built in 1480 by the mother of King D. Manuel I on the site of the Coutada Real in Vila Fresca de Azeitão. This property was later acquired by the family of Afonso Albuquerque, 1st Viceroy of India. The Palace is without a doubt one of the most beautiful Portuguese buildings where Renaissance and Moorish styles appear harmoniously combined, highlighting the graceful arcades, gummed towers and a rare collection of polychrome tiles from the 15th and 16th centuries.
In 1975, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards were planted, extending as far as the old palace walls. The first production was obtained in 1979, resulting in a red wine of exquisite character whose quality will be enriched with aging in the bottle, after having already remained for a convenient time in half oak barrels specially acquired for this purpose and which can be visited in a wine cellar of the region, close to the palace.
