The known origins of the van Zeller family date back to the 13th century, to the Flemish cities of Mechelen and Nijmegen, where they owned some properties, namely in the village of Zellaer. In the 17th century, in the aftermath of the religious wars that ravaged the North and Central Europe, the van Zelleres emigrated to Spain and Portugal, countries where they came to live.
Its connection to the wine business dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, according to the Books of Imposition (1620-1640), which refer to the merchants Jorge Fernandes and his son-in-law Francisco da Silva Moura, ancestors of the Portuguese branch of the family, as one of the greatest merchants of wines registered at the time. These ancestors of the van Zeller family are the first that there is knowledge of an uninterrupted series of 14 consecutive generations that have dedicated themselves, and still dedicate, to the trade of Douro wines and Port Wines, a fact unprecedented in any other "dynasty" of Portuguese families involved in the wine business.More
