Producer of the Month - Quinta das Camélias

Quinta das Camélias is located in the Dão Demarcated Region, in the village of Sabugosa, 14 km from Viseu. It is a property of 25 ha, 17 of which are occupied with vines. It is a property acquired in 2002, by Jaime de Almeida Barros, and it was necessary to proceed with the total conversion of the existing vineyards, due to the semi-abandonment situation in which the Quinta was. It is not known about the beginning of Quinta's winemaking practices however it is known that at the beginning of the last century the supply of wine to the Embassy of Portugal, in the United States of America, was made from the wine produced at Quinta das Camélias, being the respective barrels sealed with the seal of the Embassy. Since the Dão lands are predominantly granitic, we have found exceptionally shale / clayey terrains in the Q. das Camélias, which give their wines unique characteristics in the region, making them fresher, smoother and fuller. These are wines with great potential for evolution in the cellar. The grape variety is mainly made up of Touriga-Nacional and in addition to the other characteristic varieties of the region (Alfrocheiro, Aragonês and Jaen) there is also 2 ha of syrah this in the red varieties in white we have the Encruzado and Málvasia-fina. The grapes harvested by hand, are transported in boxes and vinified overnight after harvest. Vinification is carried out with total destemming, followed by light crushing and depositing by gravity in stainless steel fermentation vats where the fermentation temperature is controlled. The wines have been distinguished with several medals in Portugal and abroad, are marketed throughout the country and exported to 12 countries ranging from the United States to Australia. Oenology by Carlos Silva.
